Peru to catch up to Chile in competitiveness, says Chilean study

Peru is "dangerously" about to catch up to Chile in competitiveness indexes, reducing the gap between the two countries, according to a study by the University of Chile, called Global Competitiveness 2008.

The report, published by the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio also notes that the advantages of Chile over its neighbors have been shortening.

After being a leader in terms of competitiveness in Latin America, now Chile struggles to keep itself at the top of the list.

"Peru, a country that was incorporated in the study for the first time this year and ranks 35 (ranking of global competitiveness), is approaching dangerously to Chile, shortening the gap between them", says the report.
In addition, the study says that Chile ranks 26 in the ranking of competitiveness of a total of 55 economies. However, it drops from 28 to 43 place on economic performance due to little dynamism of its finances.

Other weaknesses that affect the competitiveness of Chile are high inflation, government subsidies, labor regulations and low productivity.

The ranking is led by the United States, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong.

In the region, Colombia (41), Brazil (43), Mexico (50), Argentina (52) and Venezuela (55) rank behind Chile and Peru.
