Peru's Union leaders and government authorities
have not been able to come to an agreement on how much Peru's miniumum wage
should be increased.
Last week Peru's Labor Minister, Susana Pinilla,
announced that according to a formula established by the National Labor Council,
Peru's minimum wage could increase between 6.5 and 10 percent.
Currently, Peru's minimum wage is 500 soles per month, approximately
US$158. Thus, the increase would provide an additional 32.5 - 50 more soles per
month.
The General Workers Confederation of Peru (CGTP) has declared that
a 50 sol increase to the current minimum wage is meager.
Mario Huamán,
the Secretary General for the CGTP, stated that a minimum wage of 750 soles
"would be a reasonable average for workers." In addition, Huamán explained that
the National Labor Council needed to consider more factors when deciding Peru's
new minimum wage.
